our gift from the heavens

Austin Michael was born on April 16th 2002, he was born with a chromosome defect called Trisomy 13. Austin gained his wings on September 12th 2002. I created this site to share his story with friends and family or maybe help someone with a child like Austin. Oh and finally, to show off our wonderful gift from god....

After Austin was born, they took him right away to the warmer. They already knew about the heart so there was a few doctor's and nurses in the room during delivery. They checked him and let us hold him for about 20 seconds. In those few seconds, I noticed a few deformaties on him. Erin and I talked about it and began to worry. The doctor came back in about 10-20 minutes later and said he was stable. The doctor said he was not getting enough oxygen after he came out of the womb. Then they dropped the bomb on us...we need to run some more tests, but we think your child was born with a chromosome defect called Trisomy 13. They gave us the justs of it, and we then realized that our son might not come home with us. As we read some literature on trisomy 13, we realized that he had all the classics symptoms of T-13, extra digits on his fingers/toes, his deformed ear, and his heart defect. We were even more amazed to find that 90-95% of babies with this defect don't survive birth. However, Austin did...Austin was truly a gift from the heaven's.

Prior to Austin's birth, Erin and I found out at our first ultrasound that Austin had a heart defect called Tetrology of Fallot, a heart defect. To repair this, our baby would have to have open heart surgery. We continued to monitor Austin's health by having monthly ultrasounds, everything looked good and we were preparing ourselfs for the fact that our baby needed to have surgery. Austin's due date was May 5th, but he didn't want to wait anymore and he was born on April 16th. We actually arrived at the hospital at about 6:30 - 7:00p.m. on the 15th. Erin was not feeling the baby move so they told us to come in and get checked out. Well, about 13 hours later, our baby was born. Erin was amazing, it took her 25 minutes to push him out after she was fully dialated. It wasn't till after he was born that we found out our beautiful baby was a boy.
